The 2025 Veterans World Championships took place in Paris from 3–7 November, bringing together an incredible 2,316 judoka from 64 countries across five action-packed days.

Western Australia was proudly represented by two members of our community — Andras Berta (Perth Judo Club and current Judo WA Director) and Celeste Knoester (Kano Judo Schools, former Judo WA Director).

Andras Berta (Perth Judo Club) — Men’s M4 −81 kg

Andras competed in one of the largest and most competitive divisions of the championships, the Men’s M4 −81 kg, featuring 80 judoka. He faced Mongolia’s Mendsaikhan Jambaldorj in the round of 128. Despite leading by shido halfway through the match, Andras was thrown for ippon inside the final minute, bringing his run to a close.

It was a commendable performance on the world stage and an inspiring reminder to our WA veterans community that the spirit of competition and improvement continues throughout a judoka’s lifetime.

Celeste Knoester (Kano Judo Schools) — International Referee

Beyond the tatami, Western Australia was also represented among the officials. Celeste Knoester, a former Director of Judo WA, officiated in Paris as an international-level referee. Her selection and contribution at this event highlight the calibre of WA’s officials and the vital role referees play in delivering safe, fair, and world-class competition.

Refereeing is a rewarding pathway that keeps people engaged in our sport, opens doors to national and international appointments, and strengthens the competitive environment for athletes. Judo WA encourages interested members to explore officiating alongside coaching, administration, and competition.

Judo WA congratulates Andras Berta and Celeste Knoester for their outstanding representation of Western Australia at the 2025 Veterans World Championships and for embodying the lifelong values of judo.
