Judo Western Australia would like to proudly congratulate Celeste Knoester on passing the International Judo Federation (IJF) International Referee examination and practical assessment in Pretoria, South Africa.

Celeste attended the IJF Referee and Coaching Retraining Seminar from 24–25 June 2025, successfully completing both written and practical exams. She then continued to referee at the Tshwane Senior African Judo Open & Cadet and Junior African Judo Cup from 26–29 June 2025, immediately applying her newly earned licence on the tatami.

“Achieving this prestigious qualification is the result of many years of dedication, consistent performance, and significant international experience. It marks a major milestone in Celeste’s refereeing journey.”

From Local Mats to the World Stage

A proud supporter of grassroots judo, Celeste began her refereeing journey at local tournaments across Western Australia. Despite climbing through the ranks to officiate at state championships, national championships, and other continental and international events, she continues to champion and support the local competition environment here in WA.

Off the mat, Celeste has contributed significantly to the sport’s governance, serving on the Judo WA Board of Directors since 2019, where she has helped to shape the future of judo in Western Australia.

What the IJF Licence Means

With her new IJF International Referee licence, Celeste is now eligible to officiate at World Judo Tour (WJT) events — including Grand Prix, Grand Slam, and World Championships — and will be able to be considered as a referee for future Olympic Games.

Join the Next Generation of Officials

Inspired by Celeste’s achievement? Judo WA’s Green Shirt Beginner Referee Program offers hands-on training for those interested in stepping onto the mat as officials.

Whether you’re a parent, athlete, or volunteer, refereeing is a fantastic way to deepen your engagement with judo — and follow a clear pathway from green shirt to the international stage.

Learn more and register for the Green Shirt program via the Judo WA website.

Please join us in celebrating Celeste Knoester’s outstanding success — and consider your own journey as the next great judo official.
